Wreck-Defy was founded in 2016 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. They released two independent albums and have changed band members since then. Wrek-Defy's third full-length album Powers That Be will be released in 2020. The album was produced by Juan Urteaga.
The album:
"Beyond H8" smacks the listener in the face with its manic drum beats and guitar riffs. Ex-Annihilator singer Aaron Randall's vocals are filled with anger and fury, but still have a touch of melody. Guitarist Matt Hanchuck's solo rivals any virtuoso on the market. Wreck-Defy changes tempo back and forth in "Powers That Be". Judging a person by their character is the theme of "Skin". Randall doesn't growl as much here because he wants that message to be heard loud and clear. If Testament and Alice in Chains had a baby, the result would be called "Drowning in Darkness".
On "Scumlord," Randall vocally plays a little Jekyll & Hyde as the protagonist struggles with drug addiction. Halfway through the album follows another guitar solo that packs a punch. Wreck-Defy couldn't be more up-to-date with "Freedomless Speech". A simple, driving riff leads the charge here, but it's quickly supplanted by heavy drums, bass and guitars. The closing track "On the Other Side" is a complete 180° turn, but it works. The band should exploit this change even more on the next albums.
The judgment:
Powers That Be is political, explosive and intense. A 51-minute roller coaster ride that you won't want to get off.
